CALIFORNIA IS SHAKING!

Hi All,
Recent events in California have rattled one of my friends who is from New York. She experienced her first shake on March 8, 2014, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake.

Earthquakes are part of living in California and so common, that a 3.4 is usually slept through.

Since March 8, 2014, we have been active with several shakes over 3.0. This chart shows earthquakes within that last week.

Visit the above map here and archives of past shakes at Shake Map Archive from the USGS.

All Californians should be prepared for emergencies and several things can be done before an earthquake.
Keep enough food, water and medicine for each member of your family on hand.
Look around your home and work; identify objects that might fall or shift during shaking.
Make a plan and be sure all family members know what to do and how to contact each other afterwards.
Put together a disaster kit and keep the supplies where you spend most of your time.
Know how to shut off gas and water mains to your home.
Protect yourself by knowing how to drop, cover and hold on.
After the earthquake is over, check for injuries and damages and evacuate if you are in a Tsunami zone or in danger.
    Follow the plan.

If you want more information how to be ready for the BIG ONE, check out the Great California Shake Out. They have a drill to practice with those at home or work, including the sounds of a 40 second earthquake.

I call California home because of the beauty and resources. It is where I want to be. I am prepared, are you?

Until next time,
Deb
